What's New? March 2005

Piano Studio of Lola McIntyre

Spring Recital

Wow! What a great recital! I'm so proud of each of you. As special thanks to brothers and sisters who hear the daily practice, and to moms and dads who drive them to lesson every week. Here's a little info about the hall: University of Indianapolis Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center.

Studio Class

We have one more Studio Class this school year, which is set for Friday May 13, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. This will mark the end of piano lessons for this school year. Anyone who would like to continue, call Mrs. McIntyre to set up a different time (or confirm the same). Lessons following May Studio Class and througout the summer will be $42 per hour ($25 for each half hour lesson), payable each lesson. Summer lessons are by appointment, and are entirely optional.

Summer Camps

Now is the time to think about summer camp experiences. Summer is a great time to expand our music experiences, either by playing music of our choice on our own at home, or scheduling summer lessons with Mrs. McIntyre, or attending a camp. There are many choices in regard to camps. Elementary students can look into Butler Univerisity and U of I's day camps. Junior High and High Schoolers who want to real 'camp' experience in the arts should consider Blue Lake. E-mail Sarah L. for personal recommendations.

For those interested in Jazz and increasing improvisational skills, consider Harry Miedema's Circle City Jazz Camps. Mr. Miedema has a gold record hanging on his wall in his studio at U of I - earned while touring for a number years with the O'Jays. This camp has low student/teacher ratio, it is taught by great jazz pedagogues, and it is close to home. I highly recommend this camp for four reasons: 1) we better connect with classical compositions, and 2) we learn to think on our feet with improved keyboard skills, and 3) increase our theory skills, and 4) it's fun! To learn more about Mr. Miedema, read his Bio: About Mr. Miedema, Artistic Director of Circle City Jazz Camps.

I've created a web page about summer music camps, found at: Summer Camps.

Tune In to Radio Station WICR 88.7

U of I's classical radio station is presenting some fine programming for both jazz and classical musician buffs. My colleague, Dr. Rick Ratliff is hosting a very informative program about piano repertoire, filled with some real interesting historical perspectives! Also, our Faculty Recitals are recorded and given air time. Go to: Radio, for more information.

Chord Chart

Brittany found the greatest chord chart on the web. This is a great tool for you to figure out chords to popular tunes, to which you like to improvise. For those of you who participate in AIM Festival, this chart is fun and draws together all the theory and keyboard skills work you have done, and helps you apply it to improvising fun pieces. This is when you get to 'cash in' on all that hard work!! Thanks Brittany! See: Chord Chart.

Spring Goal Setting

Since our Spring Recital is earlier this year, March is a great time to set new goals for May Studio Class, and get an early start on your next AIM Festival level! Bring your current music and any books from the past 12 months, as well as any pop or christian rock books you may have. Fun! Bring your eagerness to challeng yourself into an even stronger musician during this very valuable time.

Prospective Student Auditions: Sibling Alert

A number of prospective students have come for auditions, and some more will follow throughout March. If you have a brother or sister who is planning to start in the fall, tell me know! Both half-hour ($100 per month) and hour lessons ($162 per month) are available for beginning students. E-mail me at: lmcintyre@indy.rr.com.

Senior, Senior, Seniors!

I'm so proud of you, Brittany and Hollie! What a privilege to see you both grow into such beautiful and bright young women! See you at May Studio Class - wear spiritwear of your college, if you want! We'd love to hear all about your plans!
