Biography

Lola Mazza McIntyre

Lola McIntyre is Associate Adjunct Professor of Piano at the University of Indianapolis, where she teaches group piano to non-majors, private applied piano to majors, and music technology to prospective and active music educators. She has taught music in public schools, served in church music ministry, and maintains an award winning home studio for contingent years since 1976.

Ms. McIntyre has fond memories of her piano teachers after whom she models much of her teaching style.  Piano teachers Frank McHugh and Helene Nordstrom Vabolis fostered her early love for music and the piano while growing up in her home town of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Then, McIntyre left home to broaden her music study with pianist Joan Conway at Hope College, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Music Degree.  McIntyre was a Concerto Competition Winner in 1977, and was invited to solo with the Hope College Orchestra.

Following undergraduate school, she established her own music studio business with a partner in 1980, where they attracted and managed 5 teachers and taught over 110 students.  Then in 1982, she was awarded a full merit scholarship to study piano pedagogy at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.  As she completed her course work toward her Masters of Music Degree, she taught at UT for two years, served as orchestra accompanist on both harpsichord and piano. She was awarded Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy and Piano Literature in 1989.

McIntyre has been a successful piano teacher since 1976.  Her students regularly win special recognitions in local, state, and international competitions.  Some students' successes include: First Place MTNA Composition State Competition, First Runner-up in multi-state region of MTNA National Composition Competition, semi-finalists in two international piano competitions, and First Place in Indy Piano Play-off/ High School Division.  Her love of teaching, positive approach, and enthusiasm for music of all kinds is evident in her remarkably low attrition of private piano students. Her college students evaluate her as one of their most respected teachers; placing her effectiveness in private and classroom teaching in the top ten percent of college teachers in the country.

As a pioneer in the use of music technology in the private studio, McIntyre continues to set a standard in the field of piano teaching. An early proponent of music technology, she helped to initiate the practice of using compact disc recordings, videos, and instructional computer applications to enhance private piano study. In 1988-1989, Ms. McIntyre was invited to give teacher training workshops at MTNA State Conventions to both independent and college music educators. She is published in the field of piano pedagogy and an early author of her studio web site, initially published and maintained since the founding years of the World Wide Web. McIntyre was appointed to the Music Technology Committee of the Indiana Music Teachers Association in 2001.

Ms. McIntyre maintains high respect among her colleagues.  She was awarded the prized Star of Delta Omicron in the Delta Omicron National Honor Fraternity for Women, when she served as chapter president in 1978.  She has been awarded both State and National Certifications from the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).  In 1988, McIntyre was elected as Tennessee State Chairperson to all independent music teachers of MTNA, and was appointed and served as Southeastern Representative to the Young Keyboard Artist Association International Piano Competition by its executive director for four consecutive years.  She has adjudicated both local and international competitions.
