Directions - How do I get there?
Directions to Butler University: South on U.S. 31 (N. Meridian). West (right) on 46th Street (at the Governor's Estate), travel 4 blocks. Look for Butler Campus straight ahead. Look for the large modern performing arts building (Clowes Hall) on the right. Pass Clowes as you drive into campus. Just beyond Clowes on the NE corner is Lilly Hall. Lilly Hall is the music building. Park anywhere, even faculty slots. Enter by way of the stairs/ramp on NE side of building (door closest to Clowes).
The Acheivement In Music Festival (AIM FEST) is a piano event held every November by the coorperative efforts of the Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA). IMTA is the state chapter of the the Music Teachers National Association. MTNA attracts the finest teachers from United States.
Quoting the IMT:
"IMTA's Achievement in Music (AIM) Syllabus is a curriculum outline, promoting a comprehensive approach to the teaching of music. Thirteen different levels of achievement are outlined for five areas: repertoire, technical study (or etude), sight playing, keyboard skills, and theory (written and aural). The different levels detailed in the Syllabus provide the foundation for AIM Festivals; however, the Syllabus can also be usefully to an individual teacher or student who wants a sequenced, progressive outline for teaching or learning a particular area."
McIntyre Studio students are each invited to participate in the AIM Festival every November. The students prepare 2 solo pieces, 1 technical study, written theory and ear training exam, and keyboard skills suitable to their level. Mrs. McIntyre has served on various committees through the years to help shape the syllabus and evaluations used by the entire state.
The advantage for participation is to grow by setting a goal for one's self, learn from evaluations, and share in the excitement with other central Indiana pianists. Age levels range from preschool through adult. Levels are from Preparatory through Level 12 (conservatory standard and concert repertoire). Adjudicators are hired from in and outside the area. The syllabus provides detailed minimal requirements for each level, and is workable with any method including Faber, Bastien, Russian School, Royal Conservatory, and the standard concert repertoire. Central Indiana teachers prepare students of all ages and levels.
The event usually takes place in November at Butler University.
Procedure on AIM Fest Day
The student(s) and parent(s) begin by checking in at the registration desk in the south lobby of Lilly Music Hall on Butler's campus (different university from our spring recitals), where the volunteer teacher will answer your questions and confirm your rooms and times. Students move through 3 rooms for evaluation in the 5 different areas. Evaluations take approximately two hours and the scheduler makes every effort to schedule siblings in the same rotation, to make the day more convenient for the students' parents. AIM is a noncompetitive activity, and evaluators provide written comments for teacher and student feedback. AIM offers the best of both worlds: its syllabus encourages incremental steps toward the highest standard, evaluators are among the finest concert pianists, at the same time it is NOT a competition, but a positive atmosphere with individual reward for each participant. Students may take advantage of musical puzzles and worksheets available at the MUSIC GAMES table. Parents and students are invited to relax in the hospitality room where goodies will be available throughout the day. Evaluation forms are released to teachers at the end of the day. Your teacher will share the results at your next piano lesson. Specially designed medals (modeled after the Olympic medals) are awarded to participants of each level at our own studio spring recital in March.
